If you want to keep your air conditioning and heating systems in tiptop shape, you should hire an HVAC company to maintain and inspect these systems every spring and fall. You can count on HVAC technicians to complete maintenance tasks that you may find challenging, such as cleaning and inspecting the mechanisms and wiring of a unit. In between HVAC maintenance visits from a technician, here are a few things that you can do to maintain your air conditioner and heater.
Get a Better Filter
If your current filter isn’t the best in terms of quality, you should buy a better filter for your HVAC system. Currently, there are high-efficiency pleated filters on the market that have an electrostatic charge. These filters act as magnets that can grab the smallest particles, even those that carry bacteria. You should replace this filter every three months, and you should also check it every month. Replace the filter if it looks clogged and dark. If there are pets in your home, you may need to change the filter every month.
Every once in a while, you should check your outdoor heat pumps and air conditioning units for debris. Remove twigs, leaves, pollen or any other debris that accumulate on or around these units in the spring, summer and fall. When you use a lawn mower to cut your grass, you should make sure the clippings aren’t discharged onto the outdoor units.
Keep at least two feet of clearance around your heat pump and air conditioning units. You should also ensure that the heat pump or air conditioning unit is level. You may need to use pads to accomplish this.
